Cellular deconvolution based on unsupervised identification

A Bayesian cellular deconvolution model is available that transforms bulk RNA data (total RNA from a tissue) into cell-type proportions and the expression profiles of those cell types.

The objective of the model is to achieve the highest possible resolution; therefore, the reference may include a large number of cell types. However, this can lead to overfitting in the Bayesian model. We aim to study whether it is preferable to identify cell types manually (using marker genes), in an unsupervised manner (e.g., via Graph Attention), or through a hybrid approach combining both strategies.

The IPre is being carried out jointly with Environ, a biotechnology start-up hosted at the UC Innovation Center. Environ has already implemented the deconvolution framework and will have multiple clustering strategies—both supervised and unsupervised—implemented for the study scheduled for March.

Normalizing patrimonial terminology using NLP

The project addresses how to normalise archaeological and heritage-related terminology, which often includes a wide variety of terms used to describe the same artefact or technique, even though each of these has a single preferred term.

Of particular interest are an initial knowledge graph containing the existing terminology—which will also be combined with international terminology (referred to as TermAI)—and the main NLP pipeline (ALexIA), which is designed to recognise a term in the input text and, eventually, to provide suggestions and morphological alignment.

The project is interdisciplinary and is being carried out jointly with the Faculty of Letters and CENIA.

Using AI to enhance students’ critical thinking

The project addresses how to incorporate Artificial Intelligence into the teaching–learning process in order to foster critical thinking. Specifically, a platform will be developed in which students analyse problem statements and the solutions proposed by large language models (LLMs), with the goal of detecting logical flaws in those solutions. To support the analysis of logical errors, the LLM presents its chain-of-thought reasoning to the student, who then determines whether the procedure is correct or contains a flaw; if a flaw is identified, the student must specify its nature.

The IPRe focuses on designing these examples and making them available through a platform for classroom use. Specific courses are considered to pilot the experience. The IPRe is interdisciplinary, carried out jointly with the Faculty of Education and may be extended as a master’s thesis should the student be interested.
