Foundations for Object-Centric Process Mining in BasketballData analysis in team sports is gaining popularity. However, traditional Process Mining approaches applied to sports are often limited to a single-case perspective, modeling only aspects such as team possession. This ignores crucial behaviors for understanding game performance, such as the actions of players who do not have the ball. Object-Centric Process Mining (OCPM) allows us to overcome this limitation by considering multiple objects that interact through their behavior, better reflecting the complexity of a match.
The objective of this project is to adapt a recent methodological framework—originally designed to transform object-centric football data with spatial context—and bring it into the basketball ecosystem. Through this approach, we seek to comprehensively model the interactions between various event classes (related to the game, the ball, and position) and multiple object types, such as the match, teams, players, possession, spatial positions on the court, and the ball itself.
In this stage of the research, the focus will not be on extracting or analyzing raw data, but on establishing the solid theoretical and methodological foundations for how to apply OCPM to basketball. This foundational design will serve as a critical pillar to, in the future, request and process databases from official entities (e.g., NBA). The team will work on conceptualizing this model to co-author a scientific article and position this framework within the sports analytics literature.
